The role of the randomly distributed irregular fibers is to fill cracks in the composite. Fibers are commonly used in concrete to control plastic shrinkage cracks and drying shrinkage cracks. They also reduce the permeability of concrete, thereby reducing the flow of water. Certain types of fibers in concrete are more resistant to impact, abrasion and chipping. Typically, fibers do not increase the flexural strength of concrete. The amount of fiber required in a concrete mixture is usually determined as a percentage of the total volume of the composite. The fibers bond with the material, allowing fiber-reinforced concrete to withstand considerable stresses in the post-cracking stage. The actual role of fibers is to increase the toughness of concrete.
Corrugated steel fibers are steel wires that have been deformed and cut to length to strengthen mortar and concrete. They are cold-drawn, flexible, have good bonding properties, and are commonly used to reinforce other composites and concrete. Crimp wire construction allows easy fixing of concrete elements.
Steel fiber reinforcements are used to absorb stresses such as load and impact fatigue that can lead to cracking and eventual failure. This reinforcement helps limit the formation of cracks and increases the load-bearing capacity and ductility of the concrete structure.
