Running Track Micro Steel Fiber

Neither steel fibers nor rebar can eliminate microcracks. But any embedded piece of steel, if placed in the correct location, can prevent micro-cracks in its tracks. This is true for steel fibers, rebar, and even wire mesh.

But that's the trick. The embedded steel must be located very close to the source of the microcracks to prevent their propagation. Once a crack develops enough momentum, there's nothing stopping it from ripping all the way through the slab. This is where steel fibers prove their worth, as only fibers can provide the dense distribution of steel needed to capture every microcrack (Photo 3). If 70 (pounds per cubic yard) CFS 100-2 steel fibers are used to make concrete, the concrete will contain an average of 12 fibers per cubic inch. No microcracks should be larger than one inch without entering the fiber. In contrast, rebar designs always space the bars several inches apart to provide enough room for microcracks to grow.
